I scream, you scream, we all scream for… raw horse flesh ice cream?
Okay, so maybe “we all” don’t. But some people do.
Next time you’re craving an ice-cold cone, why not step out of your vanilla/chocolate comfort zone to try one of these 10 strange-but-real ice cream flavours:
Curry

Weird ingredient: Curry Powder
Origin: India
Should you try it: Depends on your love for curry
Would you want to live in a world where Malaysians will shout out “Ah ne, Ice Cream Kari satu”? As much as we love our curry, we do NOT want to see our neighbourhood mamak serving this.
Ghost Pepper

Weird ingredient: Ghost pepper
Origin: USA
Should you try it: No
Sticking with the spicy flavours, here’s one that requires to you sign a waiver before u try it. Why? Because it’s covered with not one…not two…but THREE ghost pepper-based hot sauces, including the Carolina Reaper which is the world’s hottest pepper, thanks to its Scoville rating of 1,569,300! Walao I can barely tahan the nasi lemak mak cik’s sambal. So yeah, I’ve not tried this myself because I don’t do well with spicy food (Yes, I’m ashamed to call myself a Malaysian). But let me know if you had the chance to try this fiery treat!
Coriander

Weird ingredient: Coriander
Origin: Hong Kong
Should you try it: Maybe
You’ll either love it or hate it. This is an absolute nightmare for those who despise coriander, including me. On the other hand, this is THE perfect combination for all you coriander lovers out there. And the best part is, it’s one of the few ice cream on this list that’s available in Malaysia.

Weird ingredient: Viagra
Where can you find it: United Kingdom
Should you try it: No
Why do you think they call it ‘soft’ serve? I can go all day with the puns but then again, this list won’t be finished itself. So move aside Tongkat Ali, there’s a new player in the game and it’s called Viagra Ice Cream. It’s invented by the same company – ‘Lick me I’m Delicious’ that came up with the glow-in-the-dark jellyfish ice cream. Costing approximately RM138 per ball, each ice cream scoop has a 25mg dose of Viagra, which happens to be the recommended starting dose. And if you were wondering what it taste like, well the creator himself said that he flavoured it with bubbly champagne.
Breast Milk

Weird ingredient: Breast milk
Origin: United Kingdom
Should you try it: No
Here’s where things really start to get weird. Invented in 2011 by a restaurant in Covent Garden, their bizarre ice cream is churned with donations from numerous moms in London. In case you were wondering how much they got paid for their service, each mom receives £15 (RM83) for every 10 ounces (296 ml) of milk donated to the restaurant.
Crocodile Egg

Weird ingredient: Crocodile egg
Origin: Philippines
Should you try it: No
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! In this case, quite literally as this restaurant in Davao City, Philippines have created another terrifying flavoured ice cream. The ice cream itself is not made with crocodile meat but just with eggs that did not hatch or are surplus. Since it was created in the Philippines, they offer a variety of flavours that Malaysians can relate to – crocodile durian, crocodile pandan, crocodile dragon fruit.
Raw Horse Meat

Weird Ingredient – Raw. Horse. Meat.
Origin – Japan
Should you try it – No. No. No.
Japan adores its unusual ice cream flavours such as wasabi, eel and octopus – to such an extent that there’s an actual museum called Cup Ice Museum that’s devoted exclusively for weird ice cream flavours. That being said, the weirdest one is by far adding raw horse meat with vanilla ice cream. Apparently there are some reviews such as The List Cafe, who says that it’s the “little chunks of raw horseflesh in the ice cream that gives it a unique flavour that is second to none.” Yucks!
Kimchi

Weird Ingredient – Kimchi
Where it came from – Japan
Should you try it – Yes
Likewise, we all know Koreans love their kimchi just as much (if not more), and it’s no surprise that they also have a museum dedicated solely to kimchi. Here’s another piece of history that belongs in that museum, and maybe even in all the kimchi lover’s tummy!
Jellyfish

Weird Ingredient – Jellyfish
Where it came from – Europe
Should you try it – Yes (If you have RM772 to spare)
Have you seen the show Worth It on YouTube? Well this jellyfish ice cream would definitely be the final spot as it comes in at a whopping £140 (RM772.25) per scoop. This luxurious treat will light up when licked as “it reacts to your tongue’s neutral pH” – Charlie Francis aka the inventor of this ice cream.
Mamushi Snake

Weird Ingredient – Venomous snake
Where it came from – Japan
Should you try it – No.
Mamushi is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. So who in the right mind would think it’s a good idea to mix it with ice cream and more importantly, WHY? In case you were wondering how it tastes, the majority review I’ve seen online is that it smells like an old shoe, and it tastes like garlic. So no thank you, I’d rather let Mr Mamushi eat me instead.
